About this artwork

This etching is one of a set of images by Hollar showing female figures representing the four seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Each is shown wearing elegant seasonal dress and handling symbolic and seasonal fruit or flowers. The poem which accompanies Autumn reads: 'Our Joy and sorrow now come both together. Autumn brings fruit, but Autumn brings cold weather. Here taste the first, the last, you’ll feel no doubt except attired like me you keep it out.'
