Bernard Faucon

The Banquet

About this artwork

In the 1960s and 1970s, photographers such as Faucon used photography to manipulate and question reality and exploit and extend perceptual ambiguities. To create this photograph, Faucon carefully constructed an elaborate outdoor scene which imitates nature but forces the viewer to question the obviously dubious reality he presents. Faucon's outdoor stages would sometimes take two days to construct, using elaborate lighting techniques - mirrors, aluminium panels and occasionally gunpowder - to achieve a suitably alienating effect.
