Japanese Lady with a Locust

About this artwork

This is one of many depictions of the characters Douthwaite met as she travelled the world intermittently between 1959-1988. The whimsical tone of 'Japanese Lady with a Locust' was appreciated by contemporary Scottish artist David Shrigley who chose to include it as part of the exhibition ‘Hmm…’ at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2001. ‘Hmm…’ was part of a series of selections from the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art's permanent collections by a contemporary artist.
