Napkin and Onions

About this artwork

This screenprint is one of four images which share stripey wallpaper backdrops. The series was printed by Chris Prater (1924–1996) at Kelpra Studios in 1972. Working with Patrick Caulfield’s carefully constructed images, Prater was the technician who made the magic happen. The uniform flatness of colour that could be achieved in screenprinting suited Caulfield’s synthetic abstraction. This still life is radically simplified, with all trace of gesture removed from the finished image.
