The photographs in this series were taken during a period when the photographer was addicted to heroin and crack cocaine. MacIndoe was pursuing a successful career as a photographer in New York when he fell into a spiral of drinking and drug use. Following a moment of recognition he began to use a cheap digital camera set on a self-timer to record the rituals of his habit. These images present an honest depiction of what MacIndoe describes as the ‘isolation, loneliness, and pain that comes with addiction’. As self-portraits they avoid any accusations of exploitation. Instead they present a personal, often painful, examination of the life of an addict. MacIndoe has now been clean for several years.
