This drawing depicts the interior of Monk’s cottage in Kittleyknowe, where Victoria Crowe’s friend Jenny Armstrong had lived for most of her life. Armstrong was a physically tough woman who worked as a shepherd in Kittleyknowe for decades. Crowe often painted Armstrong as she fed her flock, carried bales of hay and walked her dog. In her later years, Armstrong became increasingly housebound and Crowe began drawing and painting the interior of her old fashioned home instead – it represented a way of life which was becoming increasingly uncommon.
