Jenny at Home
About this artwork
This is a portrait of the shepherd Jenny Armstrong painted in watercolour. Victoria Crowe met Armstrong after moving from London to the hamlet of Kittleyknowe in the Scottish Borders in 1968. The two lived near each other and both enjoyed many country walks together. Armstrong featured in Crowe’s paintings over a period of fifteen years, often as a dark silhouette against the landscape. As she grew older Armstrong spent increasing amounts of time indoors, although Crowe continued to paint portraits of her. Crowe said, ‘When Jenny became housebound and progressively more infirm … the paintings ‘came in’ too.’
