Milky Way

About this artwork

‘Milky Way’ was painted while Doig was studying towards a Master’s degree at Chelsea School of Art: a short but fruitful period of time in his career. Doig was influenced by artists such as Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) and Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947), who paved the way for twentieth-century Modernism. The Post-Impressionist-inspired elements of ‘Milky Way’ (the hallucinatory shapes of the trees and reflections; the tiny canoe and its even tinier occupant; the rich array of surface patterns; and the all-enveloping embrace of the inky, black-blue sky and lake) are some of the aspects that make it such a remarkable painting.
