Heinrich Hansen

View of Edinburgh Castle

About this artwork

This is an unusual view of Edinburgh Castle from the South East, boldly including a corner turret of George Heriot’s School, that was founded in 1628. It is painted on paper and was probably prepared, if not finished, on site. Hansen was primarily a painter of architecture and interiors. He visited Edinburgh around 1850-52 when he toured Britain, and he also made paintings of other places of interest locally, such as Rosslyn Chapel to the south of the city.
