Alex Boyd

Stacashal (View East) from Land of My Desire series

About this artwork

Based in Scotland, Alex Boyd is an emerging photographer who embraces historical processes in his contemporary practice. For these four views of Stacashal, a summit on the island of Lewis, Boyd made photogravures—a photo-mechanical process that dates from 1878. Standing beside an ancient chambered burial cairn, he used the points of the compass to help record the views across the moors; Muirneag in the North of the island, and Cailleach na Mòinteach (The Old woman of the Moors) to the South. The photography collection at the National Galleries of Scotland is international in scope and represents all genres of the medium. In acquiring prints by emerging photographers consideration is given to how the work relates to the larger permanent collection and the history of photography in general.
