Red and White Roses
About this artwork
Redpath frequently painted scenes and objects within her own home, and depicted the objects she had gathered from her many travels. Her still life paintings contain bright colours and vivid patterns as can be seen in this watercolour and gouache study. In her later paintings, from the 1950s onwards, she often set objects against a vigorously painted background so they appear to float in space rather than sit on a surface. This reveals her interest in the expressive abstraction of artists such as Antoni Tapies (1923-2012) and Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923-2002).
