Roy Lichtenstein

Modern Art I

About this artwork

This work combines motifs from different artistic movements associated with modernism, all rendered in Lichtenstein’s trademark style. As a deconstructed portrait it relates to Cubism and particularly to the work of Pablo Picasso. The arrangement of diagonal lines could suggest the geometric abstraction of artists such as Piet Mondrian or Lazlo Moholy-Nagy. The curving black form and treatment of the yellow hair might evoke the flowing Surrealism of Salvador Dalí and the organic abstraction of Hans Arp. This witty fusion of archetypal styles seems to present a parody of ‘modern art’, with many different approaches condensed into one general idea.
