About this artwork

This print is from a group of paintings and prints of female nudes Lichtenstein created during the 1990s. It was the first time the artist had approached this major subject from the art of history as a series. Lichtenstein returned to sources he had used in the 1960s. The composition of the reading girl is taken from the November 1963 edition of ‘Girls’ Romances’. Lichtenstein translated the clothed female figure into a nude, recreating her as a nude. Commenting on the ‘Nudes’ series, Lichtenstein noted that, ‘it was a good excuse to contrast undulating and volumetric form with rigid geometry’.
