A sense of his own mortality became increasingly apparent in Mapplethorpe’s self-portraits from the mid-1980s. In 1986 he was hospitalised with pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and was diagnosed with AIDS. His physical deterioration was already evident in works such as this self portrait where, dressed in formal attire with jacket and bow tie, he gazes into the camera with an unflinching indignant intensity.
