Percy Bate

Percy Bate was born in Manchester. In 1900 he became Secretary of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and subsequently Director of Aberdeen Municipal Art Gallery and Museum. His books included a study of the Pre-Raphaelite painters and an early study of Scottish Portraiture. The painter and engraver William Strang studied under Alphonse Legros at the Slade School in London before becoming a teacher in the etching class. He was a brilliant draughtsman and his late portrait drawings are among his finest achievements.
