Eduardo Paolozzi

The Children's Hour (from 'Calcium Light Night')

About this artwork

Calcium Light Night is a series of nine screenprints made by Paolozzi while he was living in Berlin. They take as inspiration the work of American composer Charles Ives (1874–1954). The title of each print is the title of a song by Ives and, like the Cleish Castle Panels, the images are a visual representation of the music. The composer, like the artist, was a magpie–like collector of styles and imagery, weaving brass band music, folk songs, spirituals, and hymns, into his own experiments with musical composition.
