The Riva degli Schiavoni: Venice, looking East

About this artwork

This view shows the celebrated waterfront known as the Riva degli Schiavoni, teeming with people and activity. At the left is the column of St Mark, topped by his winged lion, with the majestic gothic façade of the Doge’s Palace behind and, over the bridge, the city’s prisons. This picture and its pair show opposite views taken from the same point near the entrance to the Piazzetta of St Mark’s.
