Pat Douthwaite

Hogey Bear

About this artwork

This is a portrait of the artist’s husband, the illustrator Paul Hogarth, whom she referred to as Hogey. The central mass of dark paint contrasts against the white background, which has been painted over the dark surface to create the cocoon-like shape. Douthwaite commented that the painting is also a partial self-portrait, showing her pregnant with her son, Toby, who was born in 1960. There is unquestionably a sinister tone to the work which is typical of Douthwaite’s paintings. However, it is also unusual as there are no linear components linking motifs together.
