Jefferson-Lewis is an Edinburgh-based photographer who is interested in contemporary portraiture and specifically the representation of the male subject. Inspired by photographers such as Thomas Ruff and Rineke Dijkstra, he explores the notion of blank-face portraits in which the subject is shown devoid of emotion and detached. In his series 'Butcher Boys', Jefferson-Lewis chose young men between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four to pose for him wearing a butcher’s frock. The photographer is not interested in the identity of the individual sitter or conveying something of their personality. Instead his focus is on a type of male. He deliberately dressed the men in the white uniform to omit any personal style and identified the sitter only by a sequential number.
