Alex Katz

Bettina

About this artwork

Alex Katz has painted Bettina on numerous occasions, dressed in a variety of clothing and as part of both double and single portraits. Here she is dressed in simple clothing and has a pensive, melancholic expression. Katz initially paints small oil studies like this one from life with swift, expressive brush marks, before scaling them up onto larger canvases. His portraits are often of friends and family, but his bold colours, flat shapes and close up, cropped compositions create detached and impersonal images reminiscent of billboard advertisements and film posters. Katz explains how he creates this quality, “… they’re … working with frontal light, which eliminates a lot of details and flattens the form out.”
