About this artwork

American artist Alex Katz has made countless portraits of his friends and family since the 1950s, which when viewed together act as an intimate reflection on his personal life. Katz does not use photographs for his portraits but instead works directly from the sitter, exploring a variety of angles and poses in small drawings and oil studies before scaling up. Nick, his subject here, has a quiet, serious expression characteristic of Katz’s portraits. He has also created a cropped composition as inspired by New York’s billboard advertisements and film posters. Small studies like this one are more painterly and expressive than Katz’s large format paintings, revealing more of the artist’s hand in their making.
