Sternenfall [Falling Stars]
About this artwork
'Sternenfall (Falling Stars)' was the title of Anselm Kiefer’s solo exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2007, where it referred to the monumental industrial space of the Palais which has a glass roof that offers a view of the sky. However, the vault shown in this photograph is of a very different quality and material. Made of stone, it appears heavy and dark, while the earth and debris that fill it make it seem ancient. Formally, the photograph recalls the paintings Kiefer made of Hitler’s National Socialist architecture in the early 1980s, which portray similar vaulted structures. Architectural features are a reoccurring motif throughout Kiefer’s oeuvre.
