Oceania
About this artwork
In 2011 Evans was part of the Artists’ Fellowship Programme, a collaborative project between Creative Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Over a seven month research period, Evans was allowed unique access to the collection, archives, library and staff expertise to research new working methods and ideas. As a result of this, Evans produced the sculptural work ‘Oceania’. It comprises three large sculptural forms displayed on plinths on screen-printed floor tiles. The ordered, largely symmetrical nature of the floor design contrasts strongly with the unruly plaster bodies and wooden bases above. The choice of title situates the work within a historical context of the surrealist imagination and Andre Breton’s famous 1948 exhibition of Oceanic artefacts.
