A Clackmannanshire landowner descended from the Aberdeenshire Abercrombys of Birkenbog, George Abercromby trained as an advocate. In 1759 he furthered his family’s social advancement by purchasing the Regius Chair of Public Law at Edinburgh University. ‘Old Tullibody’ himself was the first of three generations of Abercrombys to sit to Raeburn, Scotland’s premier portrait painter at that time.
