Vija Celmins

Web #5

About this artwork

Celmins has been making drawings, paintings and prints of spiders’ webs since 1992. She first found a photograph of a web by chance and recounts that, "the web showed up somewhere in my psyche. I found the image, and I had a kind of flash that this was an image that I wanted to explore". 'Web #5' is an etching based on a found photograph and reproduces the minute detail of the spider’s web with painstaking precision, revealing little trace of the artist’s hand. Fine white lines spread out across a misty atmospheric ground, transforming the simple web into a spectral entity. The fragile and ephemeral quality of the linear structure tells nothing of the physical effort involved in its making, both for the spider and for the artist.
