William L. H. Skeen
Kandy Railway, Ceylon
About this artwork
In 1864 a rail network was introduced to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) by the British colonial government, primarily to transport tea from the hillside plantations to the capital of Colombo. The rapid expansion of the railway from the 1860s to the 1890s was documented by W. L. H. Skeen and Co, the largest commercial photography studio in Ceylon.
