Meadow with Ox-eye Daisies, Yellow Rattle and Knapweed, Oronsay
About this artwork
This strikingly beautiful image shows a meadow of wild flowers glowing in the warmth of the sun. It is part of a series commissioned by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery with the aim to capture the diversity of Scottish farming, ranging from large managed estates to family allotments. Most of Britain’s meadows were destroyed by the intensification of farming methods after the Second World War. Yet, increasingly, more meadows are now being re-sown, creating hospitable environments for a wide range of insects which are essential in the fertilisation of crops. Franklin’s spectacular photographs remind us of the significance of farming to the Scottish economy and its profound impact on the shape of the land.
