August Sander

Young Teacher, about 1928

About this artwork

August Sander photographed this young teacher with his German Shepherd dog standing before two fir trees to include in his portfolio ‘The Teacher and Educator’ within the group ‘Classes and Professions’, in his major photographic project ‘People of the 20th Century’. Though this portfolio includes no photographs taken after the National Socialist ascension to power in 1933, the project as a whole was expanded and edited until Sander’s death in 1964, seeking to establish a typology of the German people during his life. Here the subject is viewed straight on, his muddy boots and the dog straining on his lead suggesting they have halted during an afternoon walk through the Westerwald.
