August Sander

Village Schoolteacher, 1921

About this artwork

The portfolio entitled ‘The Teacher and the Educator’ within the group ‘Classes and Professions’ in August Sander’s photographic project ‘People of the 20th Century’ features a significant number of portraits from the Westerwald region of Germany. Like the portfolio entitled ‘The Clergyman’, ‘The Teacher and the Educator’ comprises photographs taken before the National Socialist ascension to power in 1933. Here the village schoolteacher is shown in his free time, walking with his dog along a country road that curves into the distance behind him beside a forest of pines. The dog sits patiently at his master’s heels, though the stick and lead in the teacher’s hand suggest that the two are about to spring into action. The shirt and tie underneath his smart tweed jacket illustrate the teacher’s high social position in the rural community, as does the burning cigar clenched in his left fist.
