About this artwork

Alasdair Gray married Inge Sorenson in 1961. Portraiture is a common theme in Gray’s work and he habitually draws those around him. Inge featured in his work many times during their marriage, which ended in 1970. This tender image of Inge reading on a bed-settee was completed around 3 November when the couple married. The sheets are pulled right up to her chin and Gray has rendered the detail of the patterned pillow case and her t-shirt along with the book cover and headboard. Such tightly detailed areas are complimented by the large blocks of neutral surface, a common, illustrative aspect of Gray’s work.
