Double Loop on the Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway
About this artwork
This photograph of an amazing piece of engineering was taken in the Himalayan mountains. As the railway was largely built on steep mountain slopes, double loops were a common sight along the fifty-one mile route. The railway was constructed between 1879 and 1881 and ran from Siliguri to Darjeeling, taking nearly six hours to travel. The British were able to take control of the countries of the empire in Queen Victoria's reign, partly through the use of advanced technology.
