Peter Liversidge

Proposals for the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

About this artwork

Liversidge’s work is centred on the writing of proposals. These poetic and often humorous texts are suggestions which range from the sublime to the ridiculous. This set of proposals was commissioned by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art to mark its fiftieth anniversary. Liversidge typed the proposals on an old manual typewriter and posted them to the gallery director. Some of the proposals suggest interventionist actions and performances. Several were carried out in 2010 when the proposals were on display. The sense of ambiguity and intrigue surrounding what proposals were carried out is key to Liversidge’s work.
