'The Pyramids of El-Geezeh from the South West'.
About this artwork
To make photographs on this large scale, Francis Frith had to use glass plate negatives of the same size. He then had to endure the process of preparing and developing them in the suffocating heat of a makeshift tent. To give you an idea of the temperatures he was working in, the collodion coating used in the process would sometimes sizzle when it hit the glass! Frith had considerable technical skill to create such high-quality prints in these conditions.
