Robert Colquhoun

Figure on Horseback

About this artwork

Colquhoun made a speciality of the monotype technique. Monotypes are unique prints. One common technique was to paint an image with printing ink onto a flat surface such as glass, press paper onto it and then lift the ink and image off onto the paper. White areas are obtained by wiping away the ink, or scratching into it. Here, the edge of the image is heavily indented, showing that it was made on a metal plate and passed through a printing press. The orange colour was added over the image at a second stage printing.
