Laissez Faire

About this artwork

‘Laissez Faire’ was commissioned to mark the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art’s fiftieth anniversary. It illustrates a scene from Avery’s imaginary ‘Island’, a mythical place of philosophical inquiry and narrative invention. Using colour lithography, Avery illustrates the red-light district of his ‘Island’. The print bears witness to Avery’s superb draughtsmanship and imagination. Avery’s drawings and prints are entirely improvised and evolve as they are being made. They are often left in an apparently unfinished state which echoes the ongoing and open-ended nature of his whole ‘Islanders’ project.
