Cover for the portfolio 'Images of War'

About this artwork

Gonchorova played a vital role in the development of contemporary book illustration in Russia, with her first published work used as the cover for the 1910 Knave of Diamonds exhibition catalogue. The macabre content of this work foreshadowed the powerful works produced in this portfolio, Images of War. Her response to the outbreak of the First World War, the series of prints creates an apocalyptic vision of war, which depicts Russia and its allies in battle against Satanic, evil forces. The combination of motifs from Russian mythology and folklore, alongside present day images of men in military uniforms create a timeless, patriotic portrait of war.
