About this artwork
Duchess Marie Gabrielle (1878-1912) was married to Rupprecht, the Crown Prince of Bavaria (1869-1955), who, through Jacobite connections, had claim to the thrones of Scotland, England and Ireland. This photograph was published in Alfred Stieglitz’s journal Camera Work just two years before the Princess died at the age of 34. She is shown with two of her five children, however only one, Albrecht (1905-1996), survived into adulthood with the others succumbing to diseases such as polio, diphtheria and diabetes.
