About this artwork
Established in 1991, Cubitt is an artist-led cooperative based in London. The Cubitt Print Box included works by artists including Chris Ofili, Tacita Dean (born 1965) and Martin Creed (born 1968), and was sold to support the gallery programme. This image relates to Chris Ofili’s Afromuses, a series of watercolours made between 1995 and 2005 which celebrate Afro hairstyles and Black identity. Ofili has used aquatint like a wash of dense watercolour to depict the figure, hair and clothing, with etched lines and drypoint embellishments to the dress and background.
