Shot crow, Lothians
About this artwork
Since the early 1980s, Peter Cattrell has photographed the ways in which humans scar nature; from everyday agricultural and industrial processes to the destruction wrought by war. This photograph is part of his Enclosures series: a reference to the fencing off and privatisation of common land as well as Cattrell’s own approach to image-making. Here, the composition focuses on the lifeless body of a crow caught in a barbed wire fence. The inky feathers are silhouetted against the snowy backdrop of crisscrossing powerlines; a land altered by human intervention that we are barred from entering. Cattrell’s carefully chosen perspective and composition emphasise the scene’s natural geometry, transforming the landscape into a form of still life.
