Flowering Tree
About this artwork
In this watercolour on paper Redpath depicts a spring tree in blossom. She painted landscapes throughout her career and often made studies on location, such as this one, which would later be worked up in oils in her studio. The floral subject matter in this landscape study is close to that of her still life paintings, which depicted a wide variety of potted and cut flowers in vases or jugs. The energetic, loose brushwork of this painting adds an air of fragility to the image, as if capturing a brief moment in time.
