About this artwork

Christ is standing in the river Jordan and is baptised by John the Baptist, as related in all four Gospels. Above them the white dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit, appears in a shining glory. This painting is one of Lastman’s latest works and most probably mentioned in his inventory of 1632. Lastman spent five years in Italy where he became friends with Adam Elsheimer and Peter Paul Rubens. Among his pupils were Jan Lievens and Rembrandt.
