Christ Disputing with the Doctors
About this artwork
The twelve-year old Christ is shown debating with learned Jewish elders in the temple at Jerusalem. This picture was commissioned by the Roman nobleman Ciriaco Mattei, as part of a series of scenes from the life of Christ that included two paintings by Caravaggio. Ciriaco’s brother Asdrubale added further works to the series, among them Giovanni Serodine’s The Tribute Money. They were displayed together in the gallery of Palazzo Mattei di Giove, Rome.
