This work makes for an interesting comparison with Paxton Brown’s drawing Woman with Portfolio in which the stance of the female character is more strained. While the man in this drawing carries his portfolio with ease and confidence, the woman seems to be burdened by her portfolio: a possible reference to the gender inequalities that the artist faced at the time. Paxton Brown was a key member of the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists which was set up in 1882 by a group of women to promote and support the equal recognition of female and male artists.
