'Comment ca va ?'

About this artwork

The French title 'Comment ca va?' translates in English to, ‘how are you?’ This work is part of a series of drawings by Paxton Brown which show male and female artists painting (or trying to paint) in an art gallery while curious visitors interrupt. These drawings provide a witty portrayal of the experience these artists are having of being both the observer and the observed. It is interesting to note that Paxton Brown’s methods for creating sketches like this was to draw from memory, meaning that she avoided the issues of drawing from life and the interruptions it often caused. Related sketches in this series include 'Man Painting Observed by Two Children' (GMA 1709) and 'Shade of what ho' (GMA 1707).
