FREE family art activities every day of the summer holidays at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Give the little artists in your life a FAB, FREE day out.  Let the kids' imaginations run wild and create FAB art using a family art basket in our fabulous sculpture park!

There's lots to see and do - join us outside for this free, fun family art activity, visit the inspiring Barbara Hepworth exhibition or pop in to see the permanent collection displays. 

The beautiful scenic grounds and sculpture park at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art are an ideal destination for children and families and perfect for a picnic on a sunny day.

Monday 4 July – Sunday 14 August, daily, 2-4pm 
For all ages | FREE

Borrow a basket full of art materials, available every day of the holidays, and start sketching, sticking and sculpting this summer.

In your basket you will find:

  • sculpture materials
  • drawing materials
  • a viewfinder to help you see nature in a new way
  • activity ideas to spark your imagination

Then take your fabulous creation home. Don't forget to send us a pic of it if you want it in our online gallery!

Please book your slot in advance to guarantee your basket. There will be a limited number of spares available each day but booking is highly recommended to avoid disappointment.

Some family travel options:
By bus 
Children under 5 travel free
Children 5-15 travel free with a National Entitlement card
If you are under 22 years old and living in Scotland, you are eligible for free nationwide bus travel via the Young Persons' Free Bus Travel Scheme. Apply for a National Entitlement Card.

By rail
With Scotrail, kids travel for £1 on the train. For every paying adult, up to four children can travel for just £1 return each.

Bring a picnic

There are lots of options to grab a bite to eat at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. There is Cafe Modern One for delicious scones or salads or Paolozzi's Kitchen across the road at Modern Two for Italian classics. However, if it's a sunny day, bring along your own picnic to enjoy in the beautiful grounds. If the weather is not so great, take your picnic to the Learning Space on the top floor of Modern One and take shelter.

Rainy day options

The FAB Family Art Basket activity will take place outside but if the sun isn't shining, we have a rainy-day space inside. You'll find this on the top floor of Modern One. Just ask for directions at the reception.

Come and see what our summer activity has been inspired by - an exhibition of ​one of the twentieth century’s most inspiring artists, displaying some of her most celebrated sculptures including modern abstract carving, iconic strung sculptures, and large-scale bronzes.
