August Sander (1876-1964) was one of the greatest and most influential photographers of the 20th century. During his whole career he photographed individuals and groups of people that he then classified according to their occupations and position in society. This lifelong attempt to document the German people resulted in the ambitious project entitled People of the 20th Century.
The exhibition is taken from a major collection of over 170 modern prints, recently placed on long loan to ARTIST ROOMS courtesy of Anthony d’Offay. The prints were produced from the original plates by August Sander’s grandson, Gerd Sander, who himself is a photographer and master printer. Together the collection of photographs gives a brilliant overview of Sander’s achievements as an artist, photographer and recorder of history.
