Rokytník

1990-1994

Rokytník is the village in Eastern Bohemia in which Hanzlová grew up and where her family still lives. In 1982 she left Czechoslovakia and settled in West Germany. Following the collapse of the Communist regime in 1990 she was able to return to her home for the first time. The series establishes Hanzlová’s way of seeing: portraits, photographs of animals and landscapes, still lives and images of everyday life. The photographs conjure up a world of gentle melancholy, of familiarity and strangeness, of closeness and distance. Picturing all four seasons, Hanzlová evokes a sense of belonging and of a time now vanished.
