Calvin & Metro, 2010
DVD, colour and sound
Running time: 2 minutes
Calvin Laing is the winner of the 2011 John Watson Art Prize. The prize is awarded annually to a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art by the John Watson Club. The building which now houses the Gallery of Modern Art was, until 1975, the John Watson School.
Laing graduated with a BA (Hons) in Sculpture in June 2011. This video was filmed between two stations on the Prague metro. Only the artist's legs and arm are visible, set at a sharp and seemingly impossible angle on the moving train. Laing is interested in ways of capturing and perserving the immediacy of live performance when it is transferred to another medium, in this case video.
Calvin & Metro is on display in Room 12a, Modern One, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
