John Byrne, who was born in Paisley, is one of Scotland’s most versatile and accomplished artists and writers. This exhibition will explore and celebrate his highly innovative and richly varied portraiture. It will include around 60 drawings, paintings and multi-media works from across his career, which depict friends and family as well as famous sitters, such as Tilda Swinton and Billy Connolly. Byrne has also produced many insightful and witty self-portraits which will form a strong element of the show – the first on his work to be mounted by the National Galleries of Scotland. Following its appearance in Edinburgh the exhibition will tour to Inverness Art Gallery.
