Welcome
Set in extensive parkland and sculpture gardens, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art lies to the west of Edinburgh’s City Centre. The building, designed in 1820s, was originally a school. In 2004, it won the Gulbenkian Prize for Museum of the Year for its dramatic land-sculpture Landform by Charles Jencks. The gallery presents regular exhibitions and accommodates a very impressive collection of works dating from the late 19th century to the present: including works by Matisse, Picasso, Warhol, Damien Hirst, Lucien Freud and the Scottish Colourists.
Directly opposite the Gallery of Modern Art is the Dean Gallery.
Opening Hours
Open daily, 10am-5pm.
Throughout August: open daily, 10am-6pm.
Last entry to the show is 30 minutes before closing time.
Access
There is wheelchair access to all parts of the Gallery. There is also a specially adapted toilet and lift (although the toilet is not suitable for larger motorised wheelchairs).

On Foot
15 minutes’ walk from the West End of Princes Street.
By Bus
The Gallery of Modern Art can be reached directly on the Number 13 bus from the City Centre; alternatively, catch a bus to Haymarket, from where you can walk to the Gallery, down Palmerston Place.
By Train
The Gallery of Modern Art is a few minutes’ walk from Haymarket Station, down Palmerston Place.
By Car
The Gallery of Modern Art and Dean Gallery have free car parks.
If travelling from North of Edinburgh, stay on the A90 after the Forth Road Bridge and head for City Centre. At the Queensferry Terrace roundabout you will see City Centre Attractions signposted. Take this exit (i.e. turn right) and the Gallery of Modern Art is 100 metres along the road on the right hand side.
For all other routes, follow signs for West End or Haymarket. At the Haymarket junction, turn onto Palmerston Place (a Boots pharmacy will be on your left hand side), signposted A90 (Forth Road Bridge). The Gallery of Modern Art is 200 metres along the road, on the left hand side.
